Pelvic & Transvaginal Ultrasound in Aventura, FL
Pelvic ultrasound is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in women's health — real-time imaging of the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic structures without radiation. At Essence Wellness Med Spa in Aventura, FL, we offer both transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound in-house, so your evaluation is complete and results are available the same day.
No scheduling delays at a separate imaging center. No waiting weeks for answers.
Pelvic vs. Transvaginal Ultrasound
Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound
The probe is placed on the lower abdomen with gel, giving a broad view of the pelvis. Often the first step in evaluation; works best with a full bladder acting as an acoustic window.
Best for: Initial overview, larger pelvic masses, pregnancy confirmation, general screening.
Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS)
A slim, smooth probe is gently inserted into the vagina — closer to the uterus and ovaries — for significantly higher-resolution images of the uterine lining, ovaries, follicles, and early pathology.
Best for: Endometrium, small ovarian cysts, fibroids, follicle monitoring, ectopic pregnancy, IUD placement.
What Pelvic Ultrasound Can Detect
Uterine Pathology
- Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) — size, number, and location
- Endometrial polyps — can cause irregular bleeding
- Adenomyosis — a classic cause of heavy, painful periods
- Endometrial thickening that may require biopsy
- Uterine anomalies — septate, bicornuate, and others
Ovarian Pathology
- Ovarian cysts — simple, complex, hemorrhagic
- Polycystic ovarian morphology consistent with PCOS
- Ovarian masses or tumors requiring further evaluation
- Dominant follicles — used to track ovulation
Pelvic Pain Evaluation
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) — free fluid, tubo-ovarian complex
- Ectopic pregnancy — a medical emergency
- Ovarian torsion (with Doppler blood flow assessment)
- Deep infiltrating endometriosis
Other Uses
- IUD placement confirmation
- Early pregnancy — viability, gestational age, location
- Postmenopausal bleeding — endometrial stripe measurement
- Fertility and cycle monitoring — follicle tracking
What to Expect During Your Ultrasound
Both ultrasound types are safe, radiation-free, and take 15–30 minutes to complete.
Before
For transabdominal ultrasound, drink 32 oz of water one hour before and do not urinate — a full bladder is needed. For transvaginal ultrasound, no special preparation is required.
During
You lie on an exam table. For abdominal imaging, warm gel is applied and the probe moved over the skin. For transvaginal, a slim covered probe — no larger than a tampon — is inserted. Typically not painful; some feel mild pressure.
After
Your provider reviews the images with you immediately in most cases — you understand the findings before you leave. If follow-up imaging or referral is needed, we coordinate it directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most women find transvaginal ultrasound to be mildly uncomfortable at most. The probe is slim and covered with a lubricated sheath. Breathing slowly and relaxing your pelvic floor helps. If you experience significant pain, tell your provider immediately.
Yes — pelvic ultrasound can be performed during menstruation and is sometimes preferred (for example, for evaluating endometrial polyps, which are most visible early in the cycle). Let us know you are menstruating when you book.
Pelvic ultrasound is covered by most insurance plans when ordered for a medical indication (pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, cyst evaluation, etc.). Routine screening ultrasound without a clinical indication may not be covered. We can verify your benefits before your visit.
A saline infusion sonogram is an enhanced pelvic ultrasound where a small amount of sterile saline is introduced into the uterine cavity to improve visualization of the endometrial lining. It is more sensitive than standard TVUS for detecting polyps and submucosal fibroids. We offer this for select cases.
Only for transabdominal ultrasound. Transvaginal ultrasound provides better images with an empty or minimally full bladder. If you're having both, your provider will advise.
Pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound are covered by most insurance plans when ordered for a medical indication. For self-pay patients we offer transparent pricing. Because we perform ultrasound in-house, you avoid separate imaging-center facility fees.
